How does the alt text generator write alt text?

It looks at the image and describes what it can see. An AI model that reads images writes three things: short alt text, a longer description of the colors, shapes, layout and any words in the image, and a judgment on whether the image carries content at all. The tool then cleans the wording, cuts alt text that runs past 125 characters at a word boundary, and tells you when it did.

  1. You upload a JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF of up to 5 MB, or paste the address of an image on the web. Your browser shrinks an upload so its longest edge is 1,024 pixels before sending it, which keeps the upload small and fast.
  2. If you add a page topic, the writer may use those words once in the alt text, and only where they fit what the image shows.
  3. The image is read once. The result shows the alt text, the description and the decorative note, each ready to copy.
  4. Your image is deleted as soon as your alt text is written. It is held only while the run lasts and is never kept, logged or shared.

The writer describes only what is visible. It is told not to guess names, places, brands, numbers or purposes the image does not show, but it can still be wrong, so treat every result as a draft you check against the image and the page around it.

What makes good alt text?

Good alt text says what the image means on that page, in as few words as it takes. Someone using a screen reader hears it in place of the image, so it should give them what a sighted reader gets from a glance: a product's color and type, the words on a sign, the trend in a chart.

  • Describe, do not label. "Dalmatian puppy playing fetch" tells a reader more than "puppy" or "dog photo".
  • Skip "image of" and "picture of". Screen readers already announce that the element is an image.
  • Quote any words in the image exactly, such as the text on a sale banner.
  • Keep it short. No standard sets a length; this tool keeps alt text to 125 characters or fewer. Put longer detail in the page text or a caption.
  • Use a keyword only where it describes the image. Google's image guidance warns that filling alt attributes with keywords is a poor experience and can look like spam.

When should an image have empty alt text?

When it adds no information. A background texture, a flat color block, a gradient or a divider line is decoration, and the W3C's accessibility tutorials say such images should have an empty alt attribute, written alt="", so screen readers skip them instead of reading clutter.

Empty alt is not the same as no alt. Leave the attribute out and some screen readers announce the file name instead, which is worse than silence. When this tool marks an image as decorative, it suggests alt="" and still writes a short description, so you can see what it based the call on and overrule it. Whether an image is decorative depends on the page it sits on, and only you can make that call.

Does alt text help image SEO?

Yes, as one signal among several. Google's image SEO guide calls alt text the most important attribute for giving it more information about an image, and says it reads alt text together with what its systems see in the image and the content of the page. Alt text on a linked image also works like anchor text for the link.

That is why the page topic field exists. Adding your topic lets the suggestion use your words where they truly describe the image, such as a sailboat on a page about sailing lessons. The writer is told never to repeat the topic or add it to the description, because a stuffed alt attribute helps no one.

Should I upload the image or paste its address?

Paste the address when the image is already on a public page, and upload when it is not published yet or sits behind a login. An address is read with one request of up to 1 MB. A JPEG, PNG or WebP image can be described as it is; a GIF, an SVG or a larger file cannot, and the result says so, so download it and upload it here instead, where your browser converts and shrinks it first.

Either way, nothing about the image is kept. This tool keeps no history of uploads, and its results cannot be shared as reports, because they describe your own image.

Questions about alt text

Is this alt text generator free?

Yes. It needs no account, and you can describe several images a day for free.

What happens to my image?

Your image is deleted as soon as your alt text is written. It is held only while the run lasts and is never logged or kept afterward.

How long should alt text be?

As short as it can be while still saying what the image shows. This tool keeps its suggestions to 125 characters or fewer and cuts any longer one at a word boundary. Put longer detail in a caption or the page text.

What does decorative mean?

An image that adds no information, such as a flat color, a gradient or a divider line. It should have empty alt, written alt="", so screen readers skip it. The tool suggests that, and you decide.

Can I trust the suggestion as written?

Treat it as a draft. The writer describes only what it can see and is told not to guess, but it can misread an image, so check it against the image and your page before you publish.

Which image types does it take?

Uploads of JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF up to 5 MB, shrunk in your browser before sending. An image address must point to a JPEG, PNG or WebP of up to 1 MB.
