What are meta tags?
Meta tags are lines of HTML in a page's head that describe the page to search engines, browsers and social sites. Visitors do not see them on the page, but they see their effect: the headline and snippet in a search result, and the title, text and image when someone shares the link.
Strictly, the title is its own element and the canonical is a link element, but SEO tools group them with the meta tags because they do the same job. This generator writes the set that matters for nearly every page: title, meta description, canonical, robots when needed, Open Graph and Twitter card tags.
How long should a title tag be?
Keep a title under about 600 pixels wide, which is usually 50 to 60 characters. Google sets desktop titles in Arial at 20 pixels and cuts them by width, not by character count, so a title of narrow letters fits more characters than one full of capitals and wide letters such as W and M.
| Title | Characters | About | Fits? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Handmade Leather Wallets | Northfield Goods | 43 | 410 px | Yes |
| HANDMADE LEATHER WALLETS | NORTHFIELD GOODS | 43 | 535 px | Yes, but about 30 percent wider |
| Free Shipping on Handmade Leather Wallets and Card Holders | 58 | 560 px | Yes |
| HANDMADE MEN'S WALLETS | NORTHFIELD GOODS WORKSHOP | 50 | 630 px | No, cut off |
Put the words a searcher is looking for near the start, so they survive any cut. Google rewrites titles it finds vague, stuffed or out of step with the page, so a plain, accurate title is also the one most likely to be shown as you wrote it.
How long should a meta description be?
Aim for a description under about 960 pixels, roughly two lines on desktop or 140 to 160 characters. Descriptions use Arial at 14 pixels, and the generator measures them the same way it measures titles.
Google does not use the description to rank pages, and it often shows a passage from the page instead when that matches the search better. A good description still earns clicks for the searches it fits: say what the page offers, name the detail that sets it apart, such as a price range, a guarantee or a time saved, and write each page's description by hand rather than repeating one across the site.
What do the canonical and robots tags do?
The canonical tag names the preferred address of a page, and the robots tag tells search engines whether to index it and follow its links. Both stop common problems before they start.
- Canonical: when the same content is reachable at several addresses, such as with tracking parameters, with and without www, or on a print version, the canonical points every copy at one address so ranking signals are not split. Use the full address, starting with https://.
- Robots noindex: keeps a page out of search results, for thank-you pages, internal search results or thin tag archives. The page must stay crawlable for search engines to see the tag.
- Robots nofollow: asks search engines not to follow any link on the page. It is rarely what you want for a whole page; mark single links instead.
- Index, follow is the default, so a normal page needs no robots tag. The generator writes one only when you tick noindex or nofollow.
What are Open Graph and Twitter card tags?
Open Graph tags control how a link looks when it is shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, WhatsApp and most other apps, and Twitter card tags do the same on X. Without them, each app guesses, often picking the wrong image or a menu label as the title.
- og:title and og:description: the card's headline and text. They can differ from the search title, for example shorter and less keyword-led.
- og:image: the picture on the card. Use a full https address and an image of 1200 by 630 pixels, which displays well everywhere.
- og:url and og:type: the canonical address, and website for most pages or article for posts.
- twitter:card: summary_large_image shows a wide image above the text; summary shows a small square beside it. X reads the Open Graph title, description and image when the Twitter versions are missing, but the card type has to be set.
Apps cache cards, so after changing the tags on a page that has already been shared, the old card can keep showing for a while. Most platforms offer a debugger page that fetches the link again.
Which meta tags can you leave out?
The meta keywords tag is the best known one to skip: Google has ignored it for ranking since 2009, and it tells competitors which terms you target. Other tags that do nothing for search rankings include revisit-after, generator and the author meta tag.
Two tags belong on every page but are usually set by the site template rather than per page: the charset tag and the viewport tag for mobile layout. Check they are present once in your template, and use this generator for the tags that change from page to page.
Questions about meta tags
Which meta tags does a page need?
Every page needs a title and a meta description. Add a canonical URL when the page can be reached at more than one address, Open Graph and Twitter card tags so shared links show a proper card, and a robots tag only to keep a page out of search results.
Why does the generator measure pixels instead of characters?
Google cuts titles and descriptions by how wide they render, not by how many characters they have. A title in capitals can be cut at 45 characters while one in lower case fits 60, so the generator estimates the width in Arial, the font Google uses on desktop.
Does the meta description affect rankings?
No. Google does not use the meta description as a ranking signal, and it often shows text from the page instead. A clear description can still raise the share of searchers who click your result.
Do I still need the meta keywords tag?
No. Google has ignored the meta keywords tag since 2009, so the generator does not write one.
What size should the Open Graph image be?
Use 1200 by 630 pixels, linked with a full https address. That size displays well as a large card on Facebook, LinkedIn and X. Summary cards crop it to a small square from the centre, so keep the subject in the middle.
Where do I paste the generated tags?
Inside the head element of the page, replacing any existing title, description or social tags so each appears once. In WordPress or Shopify, enter the same values in your SEO plugin or theme settings instead of pasting raw HTML.
Is anything I type sent to Azuqe?
No. The meta tag generator runs entirely in your browser. What you type is not uploaded or stored, and the tool needs no account.
